Nursing Books: What are You Reading this Year?

by | Jan 7, 2015 | 0 comments

readingNursing books or non-nursing books, reading is a good thing. Yes, at times it makes sense to read books from the healthcare sector so that we can stay up-to-date with the ever-changing healthcare system. And it makes sense to read non-nursing books. We can certainly learn from our colleagues! (Think patient safety advancements we learned from the airline industry.)

I had the pleasure of having a conversation with a fellow nurse today. She shared the fact that reading is her passion. She reads any and everything she can get her hands on. This nurse finds her information on the internet, from the nursing journals and shared among colleagues.

So I found this post on LinkedIn and felt it would be helpful to share this resource with you here. Here is one author’s list of Top 15 Books to Read this year. While the list is not necessarily healthcare related, I found a couple on this list I am interested in checking out and reading further.

This leads me to a discussion of reading. Many of us may say ‘I don’t have time for that’, thinking that you are too busy for a hobby like this. However, what can we think about cutting out? The television show that may just be dribble. The reality magazine that really doesn’t serve our lives.

[Tweet “Here are three reasons reading can up-level your nursing career.”]

  1. You may learn something from another industry. Yes, we learn the nursing skills, practice and techniques. But what about communication skills? Relationship growth? Coping techniques? There is a whole world out there besides the nursing industry.
  2. You can share the resources with others. When you read something, you retain it. The good news is that then you can pass that information on to your patients, their families and/or your loved ones.
  3. Reading can provide stress relief. Another benefit you may find from taking some downtime to read is a healthy dose of work-life balance. We work so hard all day, taking care of other people. Let finding a good book be one way to take care of yourself.

I’m interested in hearing from you. What would you add to this list? Why does reading up-level your nursing career? How does reading impact your work-life balance?
