Reiki Healing after Surgery

If you are someone who’s healing from elbow surgery and are interested in holistic methods, then this article is for you. Reiki healing might support you in pain reduction and stress relief.

Applying Reiki Healing after an Accident

One July morning, I attempted to take my bike for a quick ride before I had to get back inside for a day of Zoom meetings. I made it as far as the end of my quarter mile street, when… BAM!

I jerked the handlebars, while hitting the front brake, causing myself to fly off, crashing to the ground.

Immediately, I knew I was hurt. And hurt pretty bad. My whole body was shaking, in shock from the experience. I was bleeding all over, throbbing in pain.

“You’re going to need surgery,” the nurse practitioner at the urgent care center said. I began to cry… huge tears of pain and sadness flowed down my face. Surgery! Not me!! I was terrified.

After the initial shock wore off, I called my reiki practitioner for an urgent session. “I broke my elbow and I am in need of reiki healing energy…” Thankfully, my reiki practitioner felt the pain in my voice and scheduled me for an appointment the following weekend.

Reiki Healing During Surgery

I wound up meeting with my reiki practitioner, over the phone, for two more sessions. Since reiki integrates healing through intention, it was fabulous that I could meet with her, virtually in that way.

After the final session, my reiki practitioner asked me when the surgery was. I told her the date and time and she said that she would send reiki healing during the surgery. Since I was so afraid of the “going under” part of the procedure, I was extremely grateful to have all of the healing vibes I could get.

As a holistic nurse and reiki master myself, I also have lots of friends and colleagues who are into holistic and integrative therapies. I shared a post on my social media, telling my tribe I was headed to surgery. The supportive response was overwhelmingly beautiful. Many people were sending reiki healing to me during the procedure. With this in my mind, I was able to head to surgery with ease.

As I hopped up onto the operating room table, I told the doctors and nurses about the reiki healing energy. I shared, “My holistic friends are even sending reiki energy to you all… as you work on this elbow repair. So, we’re all in good hands…”

The last thing I remember before drifting off to sleep was chatting on about reiki healing…

Recovering from Surgery: Reiki Healing Helps

One of the key concepts regarding reiki therapy is that it shifts the body from its constant “fight or flight” preparedness to a state of relaxation. As someone who was recovering from elbow surgery, I needed all the relaxation I could get.

Think about it. Obviously, there is going to be some amount of physical pain, after surgery. Because of pain, you may also find it difficult to sleep at night. Or, conversely, you may find yourself feeling so groggy from the fact that you had all of that adrenaline rushing through you to get you through the procedure. Couple that with the pain medications, you may find yourself with very low energy. And, healing from surgery isn’t just a physical thing. You’ll be adjusting to life and feeling mentally and emotionally charged by everything that’s going on.

Reiki healing can help release tension and support natural healing. The immune response can be strengthened and stress hormones may decrease. Also, during a reiki session, many people have noted decreases in heart rate and blood pressure, which means your body is literally relaxing.

Reiki Healing: Does it Work?

Full transparency… I don’t completely understand how or why reiki works. As a highly analytical and skeptical person, I couldn’t wrap my head around reiki healing.

When I was first introduced to reiki my reaction was like this… “Huh?” So, what did I do? I tried it! Why not? There aren’t any negative effects from reiki. At the very least, nothing would happen to me and I’d just go on about my day.

Well, this was over ten years ago, when I had my first reiki session. I treated it like an experiment. I noted how I felt before the reiki and how I felt after. Guess what? I was hooked!

And even though I still don’t fully comprehend the how or why behind how reiki healing is helping me… I just know that it does and trust in the relaxing effects. I even tell that to my students, when teaching a reiki class. “Just try it for yourself… you don’t have to understand… just experiment and see…”

I continue to use reiki healing energy for my elbow recovery to this day. Every single night before I fall asleep, I put a reiki meditation on my phone and gently use self-reiki for relaxation.

So, what are you waiting for? Ready to try reiki healing for yourself?
