True Self-Care Starts With the Nurse Within

Well, it has almost been two months since the Art of Nursing program wrapped up, and the praise just keeps coming in. One of my favorite Art of Nursing testimonials (which you can see them all by clicking here) continues to be the following feedback given to me from a nurse in Ohio who writes:

[Tweet “”Thank you for the seminar, very nicely done, extremely convenient. What I liked the best was the focus on us.””]

What I liked best was the focus on us.

The Art of Nursing event came out of my own dialogue with and observation of nurses all around me. With all of the technological focus and advancement, we are becoming expert at the skills of nursing. I wondered if the ‘art’ was lost.

As the week evolved, with the webinars being released and the evening wrap up calls enjoyed, I realized the program was more about our own care of self than anything else.

Each speaker highlighted in their own unique way that whether or not we effectively care for others all depends on how much care we gift ourselves.

This is the underlying focus of Nursing from Within. Nurse ourselves first by allowing self-love and compassion turned inward as a means to more effectively taking care of others.

Florence Nightingale once said:

“The very first requirement in a hospital is that it should do the sick no harm.”

As nurses, I know that we never ever intentionally do our patients any harm. But what about if we are too tired to concentrate? Too overworked to listen? Too busy to care?

When we nurse ourselves from within we allow the healing to happen. Taking time for ourselves is no longer selfish; rather it becomes selfless. Putting ourselves first doesn’t make us feel guilty; it makes us feel proud.

With a bit of re-framing you can get there.  We all can. Each and every nurse working in their nursing career can enjoy these shifts. It just takes time.

Very soon I will be releasing my new book, (Title still be worked on). I am extremely excited and cannot wait to share it with you. As we travel along the blog I will share bits and pieces along the way.

But the very premise of it can be narrowed down to just one idea:

Nursing from Within. A new model for the nursing profession that works. A way to enjoy the interior experience so that the outer environments are purposeful, pleasurable and valuable. A shift in the way we view self-care so that we come out as victors. Taking care from within to more greatly joy our work and our lives.

Keep on coming back to the blog for more updates and information. I am so excited to share more!
