I have to do it. I have to say it. “Where did this month go?” Typically I avoid that phrase as when we are living in each moment, each present moment; we enjoy and relish our time. But I have to be honest with you… getting ready to write this week’s posts AND realizing that this week is the last week of September… I caught myself saying “Wow, where did this month go?”
In the month of September, Living Sublime Wellness has been all about passion and purpose of your career. It has linked how our work really is related to our health. You have read articles pertaining to the energy of your role, the purpose/mission/vision of what you do, and how you bring your childhood triumphs into your current role. For this final week you will learn about gifts and talents you possess, support and connections in the workplace, and how having gratitude for your role can lift you up from even the most darkest space.
So here we go: having gratitude for your current role.
As you know, or as you may know from reading last month’s blog posts… our thoughts become our reality. Think you have a miserable work environment, a terrible team, and an unsupportive boss- “Poof!”- You have just created your reality. Our thoughts are powerful, powerful things.
But this is such a blessing! This is an absolutely wonderful thing. If we subscribe to this mindset –that our thoughts become our reality- we can create the most beautiful experiences. We can create a workplace that brings us joy, peace, and health.
Even if you are looking to change your role, even if you are unhappy, or even if you are out of work- you can call to you the situation that you ideally want to have. Just find the things that you are grateful for in your current experience each and every day. And you will bring more of these to you.
Let me share a concrete example with you, my own experience. Currently I am still in a part-time role as I build my business. I am a clinical nurse research fellow. “WHAT??!!” I know. What a role, right? While it is quite far from what I ideally want to be doing; I am still grateful for many things. I mean, for one, I have a job that brings me income every single day.
But really- let’s look at this. Ok, so while looking at data, reading research articles, and being a research assistant are not truly what I want to be doing “when I grow up”- let’s find some qualities that I can be grateful for.
Well, for one- my boss is very hands off. She does not breathe down my neck and as long as I get everything she asks me to done, she is quite laissez faire. Another thing is I get to use my analytical skills. If anyone has done any personality testing or character trait assessments- you know about the logistical and analytical mind. Well, I have one. Some other things I am grateful for is the flexible schedule, the daytime hours, and the weekends off. I am thankful that I get to meet people from many spaces and places in nursing and learn something in every single project I do. Ok, now it is starting to sound more and more fun, right?
You can do the same thing. Just look at your current experience- whether you are working or not- and really tease out what you are thankful for. Start noticing that there are really things that you can be grateful for every single day. And even if you are trying to change jobs, to get out of your current role- you can still do this to get more of what you want in your new role. Keep looking for the things that you can see with gratitude and you will get more of those experiences in your new position.
Make sense? Sure it does! I am going to start right now. I am grateful for all of those people who read my blog in silence. I am thankful for those who take in the information and use it in their lives. I am thankful for those who teach me through their experiences, reflections, and stories.
So let’s hear it. What is it about your current role that you are thankful for? How can you bring gratitude into your work space? What can you give thanks for today?
