“I didn’t want to get out of bed and come to work this morning,” said the nurse in the cubicle behind me. As many of you know, I work part-time at the hospital in a research role. I’m in an office space, but still surrounded by nurses that work in non-traditional roles.
Some of them are educators, some work on hospital informatics, others in policy and procedure. But none are at the bedside and yet I still hear “I didn’t want to come to work this morning” as I used to feel when I did work as a psychiatric nurse.
When was the last time you didn’t want to get out of bed and go to work? If you can answer this question, then maybe it’s time for a change.
And I’m not saying that you need to quit your job. But what I am saying is that no one should wake up and have “I don’t want to get out of bed” as the first thing on their mind.

“I’m gonna shove two bites of this sandwich down my throat and then head over to Oncology to get the interviews done,” said a nurse as she left my office area. Again, not a nurse in a traditional role, but still one who is not taking time to actually eat and enjoy her lunch.
I hear this all the time from clients, workshop attendees, nurses I teach Reiki to at the hospital. “I clock out, sure you have to… But no, I don’t take a break. I rarely get to eat when I’m at work.”
When was the last time you went for eight hours on no food or water? If you can answer this, then you’re not taking very good care of yourself. How do you expect to think, function, work, communicate, or do anything effectively if your body and your brain are not getting nourished?

I’m not giving you a hard time here and I don’t want to sound like I’m preaching to you. And guess what? I’m not perfect. I constantly share on this blog and in my videos the struggles and set-backs I have with my own self-care. But I’m sick of it. I’m actually really, really fed up.
We know better. In fact, I am constantly asking nurses about their wellness practices and the things that get in their way. And I hear it all of the time “I know better. I know what to do. I just don’t have time to do it. I just can’t seem to follow through. I need better balance. I have to learn how to say ‘no’.”
If it’s not working how you’ve been doing it; then maybe it’s time you got some help. Einstein’s definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” The right time for a change is only one time: now. Not tomorrow, not when my kids are older, not when my sister moves out- right now.
Let me help you. And guess what? There are some non-committal ways you can try it out. I’m holding a complimentary webinar (as I do every single month) on Thursday, October 10th. This month’s topic is how to breathe new energy and life into your work. Maybe, just maybe, you’ll hear something that can help you have a happier work day.
I invite you to join me. Come on over and sign up for the call by clicking the link right below. You won’t regret it!
