Follow Your FUN, Never Work Another Day!

Have you ever day-dreamed about the work of your dreams? Ever heard someone say: “Well, she just followed her passion… and by doing that everything else just fell into place!“? What about follow your passion and the money in the world will flow to you?

I’ve craved these concepts my entire life.

I can remember lazy days on the beach- with my sister- where we’d lie and talk for hours about these ‘other people’ who were ‘living their dreams’. Or discussions with my coaches, where I’d be beating my head against the wall, trying so hard to figure out ‘my passion’.

Here’s an example: a kid who plays music with PVC pipes (my husband works with PVC on a daily basis!):

(Thanks Snubby J, for some really cool, creative music!)

So what’s the point? Well, put simply: do what you love, what you’re passionate about, and work becomes play.

Here are three secrets to tapping into your true passion:

  1. The hardest one, but the most important: Stop looking for it! (See I said it might be hard). Stop trying so hard to ‘find it’. I learned a really cool lesson from my friend, Cassandra- pertaining to weight. If you keep trying to lose the weight, it’s going to keep hanging around. Why? Because it knows that you’re looking for it and it wants to be found! Just relax, let go, and allow your passion to come to you. How do you do that? One way is to simply do what you enjoy- the most. Do what’s fun for you as often as you can.
  2. Listen up. How many times have you left a conversation and you don’t even remember the person’s name? We’re constantly rushing from here-to-there. Often our passion is right there, at our disposal. We just have to listen to what other people are saying, how others are reacting, what feedback we’re receiving from reactions that we get. How can the conversations you have enlighten you about the passion you long for?
  3. Slow down. Similar to number 2, but if you’re rushing about you won’t even know if your passion hits you smack in the face. Instead of reaching one goal and then turning right to the next- enjoy the success and feeling of achievement. What can you notice in the downtime of life? Are you even making any room for the activities you call ‘fun’ anymore? You’ll never ‘find’ your passion working too hard, I can tell you that!

Last night I had the most awesome experience. I heard and saw my passion, twice in one hour! I got to give a talk at the Philadelphia Chapter of AHNA (American Holistic Nurses Association). During the talk, I turned my attention outward as though I were watching myself, and guess what I saw? I saw myself dancing in front of a room full of nurses! And they were dancing with me. I’ve said to a coach of mine many times: “I wish there was a way I could get paid for dancing.” Last night, I was doing it.

Then after the talk, a woman from the audience came up to me, to share her word of thanks. And as we were talking she said, “Wow, you know… I guess when you’re living your passion your work is just so much fun- like for you!” I thanked her so much for the feedback, thanked her so deeply she didn’t even know what those words meant to me.

If I was rushing around, not listening or watching, would I have realized that I am LIVING my Passion- right now!?! Probably not…
