My power just came back on today. It went out after a beautiful, but strong ice storm we had here in Harford County, Maryland. Trees were down everywhere and the branches that did stay intact twinkled in the sunlight with a beautiful shiny glow. It was so pretty but having no power was not.
And I know- many people have been without power due to inclement weather. And for much longer than we were. It’s just something most people can relate to.
Another thing many of you reading can relate to is that first shower after being without water for some time as well. I stood there today, just letting the water flow down my head with a huge smile on my face. “Yes, thank you for this hot shower” I said aloud.
Being grateful for a hot shower is actually one of my gratitudes on my morning list that I do with my daily spiritual practice. “I am grateful for hot showers which make me feel rejuvenated, fresh and so lucky to live where I do” is the statement I recite as I look into my own eyes in the mirror.
Having gratitude for something we may take for granted reminds me so much of nursing.
I was with a group of nurses the other day, sitting around and waiting for a group event to start. I’m always quiet in these types of situations as I love to observe and listen. You can learn so much by hearing other people talk.
The group was going on and on about the complaints they had with their workplace. The unit, the people, the supplies, the staffing. All of it. But what was the one thing this group of nurses had in common?
With a discussion so focused on the negative they totally overlooked all of the positives in their lives. Taking nursing for granted is something I see happen on a daily basis.
I mean how lucky are we. We get to:
- Serve and help other people on a daily basis;
- Interact with beautiful human beings;
- Have fun in an exciting, fast-paced environment;
- Get to learn, develop and grow;
- Work! How many people don’t even have a job?!?
The next time you open your mouth to complain about nursing I challenge you:
- Can you stop in your tracks?
- Will you think before you speak?
- What can you be thankful for or express gratitude to?
How can you acknowledge the little things you take for granted each and every day?

I agree! Not many people find a job that makes them happy, and what job could be better than to serve other people? Patiens make my day bright
I am so glad you enjoy your patients. Finding a job that you enjoy and are grateful for every day is a path to joy. Enjoy your health today, Elizabeth
