I mean when it’s all said and done, we want to enjoy our nursing careers. At the end of the day, if we leave work feeling frustrated, annoyed and dissatisfied- what’s the point?

3 Types of Nurses: Try Something New to Eliminate Burnout #nursingfromwithinNurse burnout is prevalent in every nursing specialty and is one of the factors impacting the nursing shortage. If you’re a nurse reading this article, I bet you can call to mind at least one time in your nursing career where you felt tired, stressed or as though it may be time to throw in the towel.

Being that we are individual nurses, making up a entire professional group in the healthcare system, we may or may not be able to impact the change we’d like to see on a daily basis- right? Wrong.

One way we can take control over our situation and hold ourselves accountable for the amount of enjoyment we feel in our jobs, is by reconnecting to the nurse within. By remembering what called us to this profession in the first place and why we want to continue practicing nursing.

OK. So that’s one way we can ward off nurse burnout- but are there others? Sure there are; so glad you asked!

Another decision we can make to eliminate some of our own feelings of burnout, is to look at the various types of nursing out there. Maybe we aren’t meant to leave nursing entirely- we’re just supposed to find another type of nursing career that we like better.

This may lead you to ask ‘Well, what types of nurses are there that I might become?‘ Great question… let’s discuss that together.

Here are 3 types of nurses that you might want to check out if you’re feeling nurse burnout:

  1. NurseĀ Coach: There are a whole host of programs out there for the nurse who wants to become a coach. Coaching certifications, health coach trainings, and holistic nursing programs. As a nurse coach, you can bridge your love of working with patients with your desire for autonomy. Coaching clients can be an innovative way to impact the health of our population.
  2. Nurse Writer: This is an interesting one. If you like to write, there are a ton of ways you can use your nursing degree in this creative field. Ghost writers, medical editors, and nurse blogging are just a few of the options in this category. This type of nursing career allows for increased creativity and flexibility.
  3. Nurse Entrepreneur: So this one’s my favorite. Yet, throw caution to the wind, since this post is about nurse burnout and if you’re thinking about going into business for yourself you should know right up front: it’s hard work. That being said, when done successfully, this option can be a great way for you to increase your income, enjoy your independence, and thrive at being the very best you that you can be. Going into business for yourself as a nurse entrepreneur, may be challenging… but it can certainly be a lot of fun!

Remember- the key here is to decrease burnout, not add more to it. What I suggest you do is get extremely clear on what it is you enjoy, what you value. How can you use your talents and skills in your job? The last thing I’d want you to do is switch to another type of nursing and then find yourself hating it, completely burnt out again.

Figure out what you want to do first. Then, from the place of desire, make a decision on your best next step. Make changes based on what you want instead of running yourself ragged. Oh, and one final thing… if you’re not sure how to start and you’re holding yourself back you may want to access this free audio on procrastination. The 3 practical tips will help.

Let’s hear from you! What types of nursing careers have you tried? Which role has helped you avoid and/or eliminate burnout? How have you found the nursing career of your dreams? Or what type of nurse would you add to the list above? Leave a comment below and thanks for reading.
