Changes in the Nursing Profession from Nurse Survey Findings

by | Jun 23, 2014 | 4 comments

Last week I wrote about nurses are blessed with a variety of nursing career options. In my article, ‘A Fork in the Road: Nursing Education, Speciality and Certification‘, I pointed out how a complementary modality like Reiki practice could be beneficial in nursing.

Today I was online reading some nursing blogs and came across this article, ‘New Survey Explores the State of the Nursing Profession‘, and was delighted to read about all of the changes that a nurse can enjoy in the nursing profession.

The article highlights the results of a recent poll done in March, 2014 conducted on behalf of CareerBuilder by Harris Poll. About 900 U.S. nurses working full or part-time in hospital, ambulatory, home care, hospice, or long-term care/ skilled nursing settings responded and an overview of the findings are presented.

The results displayed cover things like technology in nursing, career alternatives for today’s nurse professional and advanced education in nursing.

I was pleased to read the finding that “nearly all nursing professionals (93 percent) are satisfied with being a nurse and 85 percent are unlikely to ever switch careers.”

At least in this group of about 900 U.S. nurses, the findings were positive. And I wondered, if that is the case then why do we see articles like the one I found featured on Nurse Together that points out ‘22 Reasons Why It’s Difficult to Be a Nurse‘?

This displays an interesting dichotomy that is often present in nursing:

[Tweet “While we may not technically enjoy our current J-O-B as a busy nurse; we LOVE our roles as nurses!”]

And this makes perfect sense. Why? Inherently we LOVE nursing. We just have to figure out the best way to practice being a nurse in today’s hustle and bustle systems. That is why Nursing from Within is needed now more than ever before.

Nursing from Within means that you are present. You are able to concentrate at work with clear focus. You can provide meaningful care with your patients and direct communication with your collaborators. Interruptions may come, yet you are able to stay grounded in the moment.

Nursing from Within is a model that invites you to let go of what no longer serves in order to make room for allowing greater joy, appreciation, and fun at work. It is a process which enables you to practice nursing in your unique and authentic way. By taking care of you, Nursing from Within enhances the care that you provide for others.

What other nursing changes have you seen, felt or been a part of that uplift the profession of nursing? Is there anything else that you would add to the Nursing from Within list? I would love to hear from you. Thank you for reading and feel free to leave a comment or question below. Enjoy the day.

    Hi Elizabeth,
Your article was very informative. I would like some help with how to go about convincing nurses to mentor for Reiki Practitioners in the hospital setting. There is no interest with the RN nurses due to being short staffed, underpaid or no interest at all. I teach Reiki and coordinate a Reiki Circle but have been denied having a group of volunteers to go to the floor offering Reiki sessions. Could you explain policy and procedure about this?

      Hello Patricia,

Thank you so much for coming by the blog, reading the post and taking time to share your comment. I appreciate it very much.

Your question sounds like many rolled up into one. Are you trained in Reiki and have you been trying to train other nurses as well? Or do you just want Reiki to be offered to your patients?

Making change in the hospital setting (in any setting, really) can be challenging. You have to know who the key stakeholders are, have buy-in and support from multiple levels of staff (and patients), and be clear on the benefits that will be received from your offer.

I would be happy to speak more to your question, if you would like to contact me, offline so that I can be clear with what you are asking me. Each setting has their own unique policies and procedures so I would have to know more of the details with what you are hoping to do.

Thank you and enjoy the day,
      Elizabeth

          Hi Michael,

Thank you for coming by and visiting the blog. I am unclear as to what you are asking. The practice I am speaking of above, Reiki, is a self healing spiritual practice. An individual would train in Reiki by learning under a Reiki Master Teacher.

Thanks for reading and do enjoy the day,

          Elizabeth
