Feeling Receptivity

How come we don’t always get what we want? In coaching nurses I have found two main things that get in the way. One reason we aren’t reaching our goals is because we’re so focused on the future. Another could be because we’re forcing things we don’t really want. Let’s talk about the first today and leave the latter for next Monday’s post.

So you’re not reaching your goals because you’re so focused on your future.

I talked about this concept two weeks or so ago, but the only moment we have is right now. The ‘future’ may never even get here. The future is an illusion. The future doesn’t really exist since when we get ‘there’ it has also become the now.

Rather than get back into the discussion of past, present, and future- let’s get back on track with our goals and how to set them up for success.

You might be thinking to yourself, “If I don’t set my goals for the future- what the heck do I do?” Great question. You set your goals in your now. You state your goals as if they’re already happening. And you state what you want, rather than what you don’t want.

Here’s another thing- you want to feel the experience of reaching your goals, when? In the now. This is very important. And this ties into our theme this month of receptivity.

What happens when you typically set a goal? You probably set the goal, work on the goal, and want to reach the goal in some distant or not so distant future.

That’s the giving energy. The doing, the moving, the acting, and maybe even the forcing. But what about the complement? How about the receiving? How do you allow your goals to come to you?

By living and enjoying and feeling them in the now.

Sure, you’re setting a goal for a future experience. You want to move yourself from where you are now to where you’d like to be. You want to bridge that gap.

And acting on your goals is one way to achieve them, but the most successful goal completion comes when we give and receive a goal.

What I’d like you to do is to try receiving your goals- right now. Feel as if they are already happening, in this moment. What is it that you want? Do you want to feel happy, be at peace, or have fun? Can you feel that right now?

Try it this week. Set aside 10 minutes a day where you feel what it will feel like when you reach your goal. Envision yourself having achieved the goal, right now, and sit in that energy. Receive that feeling. Allow yourself to open up to that flow.

This is the give and take of goal setting. And this is a faster and more likely way for you to get what you want.

I’d love to hear your reactions or reflections below. Please leave a comment based on your own experiences with this concept.
