Is it Time or an Excuse?

I have an article here that might be somewhat controversial. Remember, you can take or leave anything I say. If it resonates with you- then great. If what I write irritates you or you don’t agree with it- then let it go. Part of the beauty of being a human being is that we’re all unique individuals with our own perspectives, voices, and visions.

My blog posts come from my own experiences whether it is my lessons learned, the triumphs I celebrate, or the challenges I’ve overcome. The same is true for this post today. I want to share with you a perspective on “time” that I’ve come to adopt and believe in. It has come to be this way because of watching myself and the thoughts or words that come from me.

Not having time is just an excuse for “I really don’t want to do it anyway”.

Here is where I may upset or put people off. You may read the statement above and say “Well, what is she talking about? I really don’t have the time. And I DO want to be healthy. She’s wrong!”

Again, take or leave what you want. But if you have an open mind and heart- hear me out as I describe this in a little more detail. And like I have said- I’ve heard this come out of my own mouth and with my self-awareness have realized that saying “I don’t have time” was just an excuse.

Let’s review the quote I shared with you in the first post this month by H. Jackson Brown Jr.:

Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.”

Before I speak to that I want to introduce one further concept from my health and wellness coaching training:

  • Based on the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change we must be ready and willing to make changes in our lives or we will not succeed.

We may say we want health; we are ready for change. But “health” in and of itself is a very, very broad and general term.

If we are not specific about which aspect of “healthy” we want to embrace then if someone asks us if we have time for an exercise class- and we have absolutely NO desire to exercise- then what might come out of our mouths? “Oh, I’m sorry. I don’t have time for that class. I’ve got to work.”

I can say- from my own experience- I’ve seen this with respect to money as well. When asked to join a certain training course or coaching program I’ve heard myself say “I just don’t have the money for that.” But this is not the truth. At least in the way I live my life and adhere to the Laws of Attraction and Manifestation.

More and more I realize, I don’t believe in lack. With more and more practice I see that feeling, believing, experiencing, and being grateful for abundance brings me more of it. We all have enough- we have plenty!

And the same thing goes for “time”.

As I’ve written to all month and shared in various workshops/articles- we have time. We have enough time for the things we want to do, be, and have. Saying we don’t have the time just makes that experience a reality.

Now I know every nurse wants health. Nurses want time for self-care. I hear it a lot. Maybe part of the reason we are making the stated excuse: “I don’t have time for…” is because we are not very clear and specific on what it is that we do want.

Instead of saying “I don’t have time for myself or my health” why don’t we take a long, hard look at what we do want? Do you want to move your body? Or do you want to engage in daily spiritual practice? Or would you like to eat healthier?

Rather than saying “I want to be healthy and have time for my health” pick just one thing you can focus on right now. What is it that you really want? What aspect of health do you want to change? You can be, do, or have anything that you want. And you have time for it. Just review the articles from this past month and you will see you are blessed with more than enough time, for you!
