Reiki Notes: Being Easy on Yourself

Elizabeth ScalaToday I planned on lifting weights, my self-care activity of the day. Yesterday I ran two miles (I think, I am not a mile-tracker… but we were gone about 25 minutes or so and I run 10 minute miles).

Anyway, today my plan was to do some strength training, but it’s a gray, cool day here in Maryland. I’ve been feeling tired and sluggish. I took the dogs on a really long walk just now and it felt great being outside for that half hour.

This is where most people experience self-sabotage. They think to themselves, “Well, I didn’t work out so I must be a failure.” (And for a moment, a quick moment, I had a pang of that feeling). 

As I sat on the couch, relaxing I started feeling irritable and guilty that I wasn’t lifting weights. The more I thought about the fact that I wasn’t in my workout room lifting weights, the more I got upset with myself. The more I sat there, the worse I felt.

However, instead of feeling down on myself, I realized- I ran yesterday. It was a great workout. I felt really good and I am taking it easy today, enjoying lounging around and relaxing with the two doggies.

Tomorrow is another day and I’ve got nothing planned. So I can lift weights tomorrow!

This is a great time to practice another Reiki concept: Just for today.

The Reiki principles start off with, “Just for today…” Each moment, each day, each minute even is a chance for you to take care of you.

Instead of getting upset with yourself for not getting to something that day- like me today, with the weight training- you have another chance to get to it- like tomorrow I plan to lift weights!

Sometimes you just have to listen to what your body wants and needs. Today mine wanted a restful break. Tomorrow my body may want a strenuous workout.

Be easy on yourself today. Listen to what your body wants and needs. Don’t beat yourself up for a break. Tomorrow is another day. Just for today…
