The Less Nursing Education, the Better

In nursing we have so much. Our education and training. Then the speciality certifications. The the higher education. Then the policies. The workshops. The trainings. The in-services.

We learn and learn and learn and learn. And learn some more.

What can happen when we keep piling on more and more information? What do we create, what sort of unintended side-effects do we stir up?

We run the risk of losing the nurse within.

Do you know the nurse inside of you? Really know him or her. Connect with, enjoy, understand and feel the nurse within you?

Nursing, as a whole, gets so overrun with the ‘stuff’ that we’ve lost our nursing purpose.

It’s not just a phenomena that effects nursing; our entire culture is struggling with this.

Currently I’m enrolled in a course with Lissa Rankin and Rachel Naomi Remen, called Medicine for the Soul: Reclaiming and Trusting Your True Self. I signed up because I’ve always had a feeling I struggle with finding my purpose.

What is my passion? Why am I here? Am I doing the work that I am meant to?

Lissa and Rachel have shared several times that our culture, the entire society, is suffering from what they call ‘soul loss’.

Similar to nursing, we overdone with information.

During the RejuveNation Collaboration, Rebecca Skeele talked about how we keep adding more and more ‘stuff’. We’re learning new things, taking courses, discovering tools, and listening to other people’s tips.

So back to nursing: have you lost the sense of self? Have you forgotten your inner connection to the profession? Where is your nursing soul?

I’m reminded of two interviews I did earlier this month. Twice I was asked the question: ‘What training, education or certifications do you need to run a nurse entrepreneur business?’

My response: None.

People want to connect with the person, know that you can help them through their pain. They want you to solve their problems. They want your help. They just want to feel better.

How can you begin to strip away the layers of the onion? Where can you let go of some of the overburdened information that may have potentially heavied your nursing practice? I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to leave a comment below. Enjoy your health today. Thank you!
